I have to say I'm happy it's turned a new year. Some bad things happened to me last year, and I am trying to move forward on a positive note. I'm going through my bookmarks and finding lots of abandoned or neglected blogs.
One goal is to be here more often, so I said why not start NOW?

Gifts from the Garden, Atomic Horseradish Sauce

My friend Jeff has many talents. A great artist, master gardener, he is also a talented cook. I always enjoy fresh from the garden gifts, don't you?

According to Greek mythology, the Delphic Oracle told Apollo that the horseradish was worth its weight in gold. It has long been used in Europe as a condiment. The origin of the name is unclear because ironically, it is poisonous to horses.

Today I learned how easy it is to make your own fresh and pungent horseradish sauce. If you don't arleady have horseradish root growing, it's easy to grow. Buy some root at the grocery store and soak it for 2 days in water. Cut it up into pieces 1 1/” to 2' long, and plant it with the wider end up. Sandy soil is best with at least ½ day of sun. Now you will have to wait 2 years before you can harvest your roots.

You will see big leaves, about 3 feet tall, then it's time to dig your roots. Save the crown where the root meets the leaves, these can be re-planted and will grow more roots for you. Wash the roots well and scrape off the outer layer with a sharp knife. You may have some harder parts of the skin which you will have to cut out. Cut the roots into pieces that will pulverize in your blender or food processor.

Jeff likes to use equal parts cider vinegar and vodka. You must put the cut pieces into the vinegar immediately to preserve it's pungency and white color. The cider vinegar is has health benefits, the vodka helps kills any bacteria that may be lingering. You can also add a bit of salt if you like. As you are pulverizing, also add water as needed to liquify the mixture.

This wonderful pungent mixture will keep for about a month in your refrigerator in a tightly sealed container. If you are adding it to a cooked sauce, wait until the very end, and do not cook it more than 20 minutes. Jeff finds if you cook it any longer than 20 minutes it starts to lose it's zip.

What an easy and wonderful gift from your garden to your friends..... Don't forget to make a cool label for the jar!

Inspirations

Spring is just around the corner. We've been teased with a few 70 degree days. It;s time for renewal and assessing directions. I've been engaged by a book. I can't really say I'm reading it, because it's not the kind of book you sit down and read from cover to cover. "How to be an Explorer of the World" by Keri Smith is c collection of ideas and exercises to give your creativity a kick in the pants.
I often wonder why I have so many things. They is a tray at my workbench of beads and metal parts. And I have other things which may not be significant, like sea pebbles or acorns. But this is all food for the creative process. Keri writes: " The Indo European root of the word 'art' is 'to arrange' or 'fit together' (join). In this light, art can be pared down to its most simplistic form. We begin by collecting, the playing with the materials or objects."

I've been fascinated by the lamp work beads by artist Ellen Dooley. I really enjoy pairing her beads with other materials, gemstones and pearls and of course sterling silver. This blue beads in this necklace were my first purchase , and it took me months before the right combination struck my eye. These earrings have just a hint of spring. The colors really pop when you take a close look. You know where to find me, exploring the world! And I'm asking, what inspires you?

Thinking of Spring!

This is the worst winter I have seen since I moved back to New Jersey in the 80's. It's been cold, so there are piles of snow everywhere! And all the towns are crying poverty, so snow removal has been abysmal.
This was the scene from my window on Wednesday, lucky me, I stayed home.
I've been working on some jewelry for spring, can you guess what I am making?

It's the time of year when we focus so much on gifts, buying, giving, how much money we spend. We tend to forget there are important gifts we can give that don't cost a penny. Many of us donate money and volunteer our precious time to non-profits, helping others.
Mary, a wife of one of my co workers, Fred, has been in dialysis for many years. Because she was over 50, they did not think she would ever receive a transplant. The call came last week, and she is recovering well. What a gift they received! I have another friend who is also waiting who may not be so lucky. Another co-worker is battling leukemia with some success thanks to bone marrow donations. Most states make it easy to be an organ donor by a check off on your license renewal. And of course, the simple thing that many of us can do time and time again is donate blood.

I know a wonderful group of very creative jewelry artisans on Etsy, the JET team. We love helping each other grow our businesses. One of the discussions lately has been about expanding our creative horizons. To think "out side the box" of our usual style, and challenge ourselves to make something new and different. This idea was inspired by several of our members who are always expanding their skills by exploring new a different crafts .

JemsbyJBandCompany decided to explore the word of fashion and created this very feminine necklace. It features genuine rose quartz, crystals and pearls on a beautiful silver tone chain.

Peg of AbacusBeadCreations is a prolific artist who must eat, sleep and dream about beads. Her shop is chock full of wonderful designs for women, and she is branching out to making unisex designs that are great for men as well as women.

Always the adventurer, Nicolle of SilverCanyons loves to try new skills. You will find only a few items in her shop, but a huge variety of designs and techniques, from beaded sterling silver, to enameling and casting. I really love this textured sterling silver ring.

My challenge was to return to doing extreme fashion design. I love making jewelry that can be worn any day, any time. So to make a bold statement item was a bit of fun. I found some beautiful vintage lamp crystals in a stunning shade of blue. And look what happened!

Sneak Peek

I found a little inspiration a few months ago. While visiting one of the trade shows, I saw many artists showing monogram jewelry. But it was all the same idea, a disc or oval, with the same basic lettering. How boring! I figured I could do something a little bit different and create some monograms with character. Here's a sneak peek at my first one, the letter "C" handmade in sterling silver. It will look different when it's oxidized and added to a chain.
What I'm wondering is what letters to do next. I tried to be scientific and to look up popular names but there are too many lists. (I did find out that Moore is a more common name in Northern Ireland than Ireland.)
So I thought I would ask you for your suggestions. Please vote in the poll on the right side or leave a comment with the letter you think I should make next. Thanks for your help!

It's getting close to Mother's Day. I know you men are famous for waiting til the last moment to shop, but you will miss out on some beautiful finds if you do. New Year's Surprise!

My etsy shop has been rolling along now for almost 2 years. Lots of great jewelry, a variety so there are many choices for many tastes.
It was a big surprise to me when my Acorn Pendant was included in the latest voter poll. This acorn has a long history. The bottom was cast from a real acorn. I carved the top of the acorn in wax. It sat dormant for several years in my idea box. This year I finally dusted it off and made several in brass and sterling silver as well as all sterling. Because it is made in lost wax, each one will be slightly unique, a one of a kind treasure.

There are many great jewelry items from my JET team in this voter poll. So, if you are not fond of my acorn, take time to check out the other jewelry and I will not mind if you vote for one of my friends!

500 Hearts

Any of your who are familiar with Etsy know about hearts. I was up to 496 hearts the other day and ran an announcement saying I'd give some earrings to my 500th heart.

the winner is Jean- a fellow jewelry maker. Here's what she has to say:

The way I started making jewelry is kind of funny. I bought a necklace at Walmart and I didn't really like it, so I took it apart and redid it, so I liked it better. Then, I wanted a matching bracelet and earrings and I did the same thing. Then I began to think that there had to be a cheaper and easier way to do this and my hobby/obsession was born.

Every summer, I sell at a very popular market and one of my friends there asked me if I'd ever heard of Etsy. "What's that?" I asked and she explained it to me. I began with just listing a few things and now I have three shops: SilverSmack.etsy.com, SuperiorStones.etsy.com, and MoonMystic.etsy.com. Each shop has it's own style and personality.

My current favorite materials are are flashy stones, like labradorite, moonstone, kyanite, and sunstone. I also love working with silver- hammering, oxidizing, texturing, buffing, twisting it, and just seeing what I can make it do.

This is my favorite item in your shop and a great photo too! The awesome specimen of Labradorite is perfectly accented by the hammered circle. jean you must have the magic touch because this pendant was just sold!

Ceramic Arts

My oldest friend from college days at the School for American Craftsmen is Jeff Glockson, an incredibly talented ceramic artist. We utilize many mass produced ceramic objects in our everyday lives. Fine art ceramic objects have a totally different life. I'm putting Jeff and his art in the spotlight, because the process of creation is very complex.
The ceramic artist must possess many skills. The scientist must experiment with the clay compositions, to find the right formula that will not only hold the form properly when wet and pliable, but it must also dry and endure firing in the kiln without cracking. Every artist has his own favorite formulas. Addionally, he must also develop glaze formulas that will work with the clay, fire properly with the correct colors. As much as one must work scientifically, there is still the element of the unknown . The clay might not dry properly, the kiln might not heat evenly, many factors cannot be precisely controlled, as much as one might try.
Jeff loves nature. He has magnificent gardens. It's quite logical that he would focus on making sculptures and objects to enhance a garden. Here is a preview of some of his new work.

Be sure to visit the booth of one of our organizers, Beachchik. Kim has created not only really adorable clothing for little ones, but wonderful accents for your home.
While I'm mentioning organizers, Yin will have an assortment of her delicious popcorn and teas as well as some of her other fun creations. You can visit her shops for a preview whatseatingyin and yinvivo weddings and photography. My friend loved the curried popcorn!

Treasures of New Jersey

A few weeks ago, I finally was able to visit the NJ Maritime History Museum.
I bet you are wondering what connection the Museum has to cool gifts.... it's very simple! The museum itself is a treasure, and a gift to anyone who makes the time to visit. But in addition- the gift shop is almost exclusively handmade in New Jersey products!
I hope that if you are visiting the Jersey shore , you will make some time to visit and of course take home some treasures hand made here in the Garden State!

I'll admit that I just love working with metal. We have a relationship= the sound of the saw, the clink of the hammer. But it has limited color. I'm not skilled with enamel. So what can I do? We're tucked in at the Classics Bookstore at 117 Warren Street. I can't think of a better place to shop. In addition to used books, many rare and unusual titles, you can find titles by local authors. Times are tough. I've got afew ideas to help you get through and help with the recovery at the same time!

BUY HANDMADE- I've talked about this before. When you buy from an artist you keep the money here as well as support a real person. There are great places to find handmade goods like ETSY.COM and ARTFIRE.COM.

EAT LOCALLY- Similar to above. While the chain restaurants hire your neighbors, your money gets shipped off to the corporate HQ which is where? Eat at your corner diners and pubs. The money will stay in your community.

SHOP CONSIGNMENT SHOPS- Similar to the above. Your money stays in your community, often going to help a good cause. You'll also save a bundle buying gently used goods.

PARK YOUR CAR- Walk, bike, take public transportation. Sure gas prices have dropped, but you can be certain they will rise again. Plus, you'll be helping save the planet.

BUY YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER- Local newspapers are all under assault from economic forces. Do you need your local news? Probably! Think of the advertising you rely upon, news on local issues, and don't forget the comics!

Meeting Crafty Friends

I've been very lucky to have met many new crafty friends from Etsy. While meeting folks from New Jersey is only slightly challenging, trying to meet members of the JET (Jewelry on Etsy Team) has been more challenging, since we are spread over the globe.

Today I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet the lovely Angelika from Vandiva and Vandivalicous. We could have talked all day, but alas, I had plane to catch. What was most interesting was the fact that although our backgrounds are totally different, we had many common threads running through our lives.

I have to also say that everyone I have met so far has been just terrific! I have been very pleased them all.

I did most of my shopping at two craft shows. The first, the Handmade Faire, was on a stormy day. The poor folks who were outside had a rough day. Many Etsy craft people were selling their wares.

The second was in Point Pleasant at OM Baby. We all had a great time, even though some of did not sell very much. But I'm happy. Most every one is getting handmade gifts that were made here in the USA.

Hopefully, you will look for local artists when you shop on line. There are all kinds of craft shows on every weekend, it's not too difficult to find one!

First , I want to say that this year, more than ever, it's important to shop USA. Keep the money you are spending here. When you buy handmade in USA, you are helping to support an artist!

I can't take credit for this idea. It came from one of my fellow EtsyNJ crafters, and it's a fabulous suggestion!

One an account on Etsy.com for your spouse, so, friend or whomever is buying you lots of presents. Use the account to pick all the items that you love and put them in your favorites folder.

Then give the login information to the pther person so they can see what you want and buy it for you! It's just so easy and everyone will be happy at present opening time.

It was a busy week, and I've been absent. here are some new earrings I created using some of the beads from our team swap. It does not show very well in the photo, but the tube beads have a fiber-optic effect.

I met Rachel yesterday. I had posted about a leather jacket which had become too raggedy to wear any longer but could be recycled. Rachel responded and we live close so I was able to pass it on! As artists, it is hard to throw things away because we always see the potential creative ways to use things. Think before you toss! Today I stumbled upon Linda Faigen's shop for jewelry and hairsticks.

I have short hair, but as you know, it's very easy to want what you don't have. I still have some hair sticks from my mother in my treasure box. There is a certain fascination with objects that sometimes we can't explain, I guess it's part of the creative process.

If I had long hair, I could picture twisting it up with any of Linda's hair sticks! I really like this set with the glowing handmade beads.

I have lots of jewelry I've made, languishing around. I thought last night about summer, so I put together a few ankle bracelets.
